A Bit About Me
I began my journalism experience as a junior in high school thrust right into the midst of it during a summer camp on Michigan State's campus. At my first MIPA Camp, I learned about AP Style, feature pieces, and the art of an interview through my sports class with Rod Saterthwaite. From then on, I loved writing contributing to the Huron Emery over 50 times during my time at Huron. Then the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and I was in a stuck spot. Without the on-campus opportunities usually available to freshman, I had to rely on my connections, and was ultimately able to become a volunteer at Impact 89FM. Through the year of at-home learning, I was able contribute at Impact, writing, and broadcasting while learning more about how vast the world of journalism truly is. Once I movedon to Michigan State's campus, the opportunities were endless, and it seemed as though I was always writing a piece, or going to a press conference, or recording a podcast, or covering a game. I may have wanted to be a journalist last year, but the experience of being on-campus fully settled it.
I've had to adapt my learning and writing creativity and expand it in many ways due to mental illness. In my free time I enjoy playing water polo and swimming, both of which played big parts in who I am today. Other hobbies include reading, working out, cooking, and hiking. I enjoy traveling with passport stamps including India, the United Kingdom, Canada, Mexico, the UAE. I enjoy cooking various cuisines and have hiked in numerous national parks in my spare time as well.
Journalistic Experience
Michigan State Men's Water Polo Social Media Chair
December 2021 - Current
I was nominated into this position by my teammates following our 2021 season. Responsibilities include handling the team's Instagram and Twitter. With less than two months on the job, we have extended our contact with prospective high schoolers by over 50% while re-starting our website that became defunct over the fall semester. Since re-starting on January 21st, the site has received over 1,000 views.
Locker Room Attendant at Miami Open presented by Ítau
March 2021 - April 2021
This was my first out-of-state internship. I receive the offer five days prior to arriving in Miami, and did not regret it for a second. As an attendant I was assigned various tasks around the locker room including restocking items for players coaches, and tournament officials, driving players to and from practice courts and arenas, and the daily setup and takedown of a recreation area on the field of Hard Rock Stadium.
Fansided: Detroit Jock City Contributor
December 2020 - March 2021
My time with Detroit Jock City was short-lived, and taught me an important lesson about balance. I began contributing as I was undergoing changes within my personal life, and trying to balance contributing with volunteering at Impact and school was ultimately too much for me to balance and I made the decision to step away.
Impact 89FM General Assignment Volunteer
November 2020 - Current
I began working at Impact 89FM within its' sports department my freshman year at Michigan State. I had learned about the radio station after taking a podcasting class with Jeremy Whiting (Impact 89FM's director) at MIPA Camp as a rising senior. At Impact I have been able to complete various types of journalistic work such as writing, photography, broadcasting, and podcasting. Impact is where I really settled in as a journalist and expanded my work and portfolio.
Solomon Rajput Campaign Volunteer Phonebanker
April 2020 - May 2020
Working in the Rajput campaign was a very interesting experience. I started volunteering during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and learned about the ins-and-outs of online meetings while phone banking various people all over Washtenaw County. During my time phonebanking, I was able to sway 20-plus to Rajput's side, who was running against a two-time incumbent
The Huron Emery
July 2018 - May 2020
This is where I got my start with writing. At the Emery I learned about AP Style, the art of interviewing, photography basics, and basic Adobe programs such as InDesign, Illustrator, PhotoShop, and Audition. The Emery is where I fell in love with sports journalism, loving the pace of the newsroom, and the constant action. My advisor Sara-Beth Badalamente was extremely impactful in my initial growth not only as writer, but as a person. I owe a lot to her for where I am today.
